SPARK ART FAIR
Spark Art Fair, Vienna
2022
On the occasion of the Spark Art Fair 2022, Galerie Suppan presented a solo exhibition of new works by Michael Ornauer, showing exclusively his monochrome black paintings and sculptures.

Michael Ornauer focuses on the spirituality of the Japanese aesthetic, Wabi-Sabi, the contemplation of imperfection and transience.
In his paintings, the artist deals with the matured, veiled and broken by painting over coloured, finished paintings with black paint and then exposing the underlying layers of paint by sanding or carving.
In the Western world, the colour black is associated with death and mourning, while in Japan black stands for life and is perceived positively.
Of the two achromatic colours, black and white, Ornauer prefers black. Black has depth and diversity. Michael Ornauer’s understanding of the colour black is based on Far Eastern thinking. For him, black stands neither for death nor destruction, but rather for life, but also for the mystical, the unknown.
